Mike Brooks VS Jason Newton

Mike BrooksVSJason Newton

If you remember Brooks's last fight that occurred during Bloody Boxing Easter, you'll remember that Brooks was very evasive and kept on his feet in that fight. Brooks had taken his leave from the boxing ring for a good number months so that he become Reverend Brooks at the Universal Life Church so there was the question whether or not the reverend still had the boxing spirit in him. This was the question on everyone's mind as Rev. Brooks stepped in the ring pitted again newcomer Jason Newton.

Maybe it was his holy aura or maybe it was just skill, but Brooks still had the moves God gave him. As soon as the bell rang Brooks started off with a good evasive game and would stay on his toes. If Newton was to move in on Brooks, he was going to have to play Brook's stepping game. And that he did, and quite well at that. Both fighters would stay on their toes as they moved around the ring. In fact they moved so well that they hardly hit each other when they swung. The first round was mostly dancing and the occasional body blow. Clearly the fighters were going to have to break the stalemate.

In the second round, Brooks would try( and succeed to some degree) with head shots, but after a few punches Newton wised up to this strategy and began pushing Brook's arms away. Both fighters reach was about even so there was no upper hand they could have when going for the head. With that said, they tended to move back to the body blows. Nearing the end of the 2nd round Brooks would finally get a heavy shot into Newton's gut (you could hear the wind being knocked out of Newton) this would stopped the fight and end round 2.

During the round break, Rev. Brooks discussed his strategy with the camera's in an exclusive interview here.

It was clear his strategy was working for him against Newton. After the breather, the two touched gloves again and the fight was on. Early into the fight Brooks was able to deal another heavy blow that would floor Newton. It was seeming as if he was wearing Newton down. Newton would get up quickly though and the fight continued. After the knockdown, it seemed that both fighter pumped up the aggression and did less dancing and more hitting. The attacks would go on until about 20 seconds left in the round when both fighters who sounded worn out would dance some more, throw some light blows, and then finally just waited for the clock to run out. A good show on both sides...
